At Finstall First School, we make full use of the National Curriculum for Mathematics (2014) to ensure that all pupils:
- become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately
- reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, exploring relationships and making generalisations, and developing arguments, justification or proof using mathematical language
- can solve problems by applying their mathematical skills to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
The Structure of the Daily Maths Lesson
In Key Stage 1, the daily lesson will be about 45 minutes in length whilst in Key Stage 2, the daily lesson will be about 60 minutes in length.
Children will start their lessons with a snappy, mental session that lasts for about 10 – 15 minutes. It is devoted to developing the children’s mental skills and strategies and will be mainly number based. These sessions are also used to revise concepts taught previously in the year and to practice multiplication tables. In the second 30 – 40 minutes, the children learn through direct, interactive teaching and through their own independent work. This part of the lesson is lively, active and stimulating and participation features strongly. Practical resources are used to support children throughout the school to help them become more independent with their learning. We find that practical resources help children to develop resilience and perseverance with the tasks they are completing.
The final 10 minutes is used for the plenary session. This is the time to draw the class back together and review, discuss or extend the main teaching objectives of the lesson.
